7 Non-Green Foods that Slow Aging

EAT WELL, LOOK YOUNG, LIVE LONG

As we get older, our metabolism slows down. We start losing muscle tone and our hormone levels go a bit awry, making us disposed to gaining weight. We also become more prone to mood changes, more health problems and suddenly, we find ourselves reading these kinds of articles with more attention.

How do we game the system and maintain that glow and zest?

The first line of action should obviously be getting into a regular exercise routine, getting enough sleep, and reducing your stress levels; but eating antioxidant-rich foods could also help curb hunger pangs and cravings whilst improving our overall health.

So what foods should go on our plates?

No nouvelle cuisine beats Mother Nature when it comes to combating aging. So when thinking about foods that can save your life and prevent aging, think organic.

Ah, the silent “ugh”, the gag reflex that comes every time you hear the word ‘greens’. But, trust this, think organic and believe – not all greens meh and boring.

Here are seven non-green and less boring foods that act as anti-aging components:

Sweet Potatoes

According to Shaw, as you get older, your skin, hair, and nails require a little extra care—and one of the best vitamins for keeping them strong and healthy is the B vitamin biotin. Sweet potatoes have the added benefit of not just biotin, but also vitamin C and magnesium. They also contain beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A which helps to improve the circulation of oxygen to the skin, reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Peanut butter

Oh, the sweet breakfast (and lunch and even snack) spread! Peanut butter is a great source of protein. And protein pumps you full of energy for the run. When getting peanut butter at local stores, watch out for the spreads with extra calories – be strong and go lo-cal. Always opt for the organic type.

Dark Chocolate

Going clean doesn’t have to be boring. The green stuff is important, but good health is more than spinach and celery. It may feel like a cheat meal but dark chocolate actually has a whole range of benefits for our bodies.

Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that protect your skin from the sun giving you a youthful look. This compound also helps skins look smoother and more hydrated. It is important to choose dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa to ensure flavonoid levels are high enough.

Mixed Nuts

Aside from peanut butter, eating nuts as part of a balanced diet can add years to your life. From almonds to groundnuts, they help in preventing chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and cognitive decline. Nuts contain both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and both compounds have been associated with reduced heart disease and type 2 diabetes risk.

Greek Yoghurt

Ease on the ice cream and try some yogurt. Yogurt contains high fructose and calcium that prevent osteoporosis, reduce high blood pressure, lose weight and improve skin. Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by a loss of bone density over time and it leaves those who suffer from it vulnerable to bone deterioration and fractures.

Red wine

According to Wellness Resources, red wine is full of flavonoids that reduce the risk of age-related diseases and have amazing antioxidant properties. These flavonoids help your neurons keep and recall memories and improve your brain’s recovery from exposure to toxins and aging. So, break out the rouge, indulge in dark chocolate, and find that Chakra!

Whole Grains

You don’t need to quit on pasta, you just have to buy the right kind and eat in moderation. Whole grain meals, pasta inclusive, are very effective in weight loss or weight maintenance regimen, and it has some added benefits for digestion.
