Eyes On Olubunmi Adeyemi’s AFROMINIMA™

AFROMINIMA™ is a design and lifestyle movement inspired by the Japanese Minimalism aesthetic and the Scandinavian Functional style combined with our strong African Heritage.

The DA Brand: The word ”dá” is the Yoruba (a popular West African language) word meaning “To make or To create”

More often than not, Africa, when it comes to design, is usually portrayed as a multiplicity of hues, diverse prints, large styles and pompous elegance showing ‘pride’ and presence. But Olubunmi Adeyemi, the ideator behind the design movement AFROMINIMA™ ( a fusion of two words – ‘Afrocentric’ and ‘minimalism’) pushes Africa beyond a monothematic narrative.

He shows that African designs can be minimal, an unconventional approach for a densely diverse continent.

“Africa is a dynamic land and I am heavily influenced and inspired by our culture,” Adeyemi tells Design Indaba, “but I also believe in moving us forward to the future through design.”

AFROMINIMA™ designs celebrate cultural blend – Olubunmi fuses his rich African (Yoruba) heritage, Japanese minimalism with Scandi influences.

Olubunmi Adeyemi is an internationally acclaimed designer, interior architect and an influential force in Africa’s growing design industry.
